The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has called for heightened accountability and transparency among public officeholders in Nigeria.
During a recent meeting with the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede emphasized the necessity for leaders to manage public finances with integrity.
He highlighted that public officials should remember their temporary role and the eventual need to justify their actions.
Olukoyede praised the NDDC’s new management under Chief Samuel Ogbuku for its commitment to reform and transparency, suggesting that collaboration with the EFCC could enhance the NDDC’s operations.
He urged all public servants to adhere to principles of probity, warning that those who engage in corrupt practices may face exposure from close associates in the future.
This call for accountability is crucial, as a recent study revealed that the financial reporting system in Nigeria suffers from significant weaknesses due to a lack of transparency, which hampers effective governance and public trust.
