Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in Nigeria’s 2023 general election, has threatened to sue Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Communication and Strategy, for defamation.
Obi’s legal team has demanded a retraction, a public apology published in four national newspapers, and N5 billion in damages.
The controversy began with a statement published by Onanuga on his verified “X” (formerly Twitter) handle, “@aonanuga1956,” on July 20, 2024.
Onanuga alleged that “Peter Obi’s supporters are the people planning mayhem in Nigeria” and held Obi responsible for potential anarchy.
Obi’s lawyers have refuted the allegations, describing them as “false and malicious.” They argue that the publication was not only defamatory but also intended to damage Obi’s reputation and standing.
In a strongly-worded letter, Obi’s legal counsel, Chief Alex Ejesieme, SAN, has demanded that Onanuga retract the statement and tender an unreserved apology within 72 hours. Failure to comply will result in legal action for defamation and libel.
