Tragedy struck on Monday, August 19, when Olaniyi Ijalaye, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Ogun State, collapsed and died shortly after attending a meeting at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Abuja.
Ijalaye had been in high spirits during the meeting, which focused on the upcoming governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states, as well as filling vacant positions in the National and State Assemblies.
After the meeting, he returned to his hotel room, where he suddenly slumped. Despite the lively discussions earlier, his sudden passing has left colleagues and friends in shock.
Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun expressed his condolences, describing Ijalaye as a dedicated public servant known for his integrity and commitment. He emphasized the profound impact Ijalaye had on public service and the loss felt by the community.
Ijalaye, who hailed from Ondo State, was appointed as Ogun REC in March 2022.
His unexpected death has raised concerns and highlighted the importance of health awareness among public officials, especially during intense work periods.
