British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, are among six people missing after their luxury yacht, Bayesian, sank off the coast of Sicily during a sudden storm on August 19.
The yacht, carrying 22 people, capsized around 5 a.m. local time after being struck by a waterspout, which is akin to a tornado over water.
The trip was intended as a celebration of Lynch’s recent acquittal of fraud charges in the U.S., marking the end of a long legal battle.
Tragically, while 15 people, including Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, were rescued, the search continues for the missing, which includes notable figures such as Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International.
Rescue efforts have been hampered by the wreck’s depth of 50 meters and obstructions within the vessel.
A body, believed to be the yacht’s cook, has been found nearby. The incident highlights the unpredictability of severe weather, as local authorities express their condolences and continue the search for the missing individuals.
