In a recent speech, former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo emphasized that the country’s stagnation is primarily due to self-centered leaders who lack the necessary knowledge, understanding, and commitment to service.
He stressed that leadership should be transformative, not transactional, and must be centered on serving the people rather than personal interests.
Obasanjo lamented the dearth of good leaders, stating that it remains the bane of Nigeria’s underdevelopment for almost 64 years after independence.
He urged Nigerians to prioritize the recruitment of selfless and transformational leaders at every level of governance, as this would have a ripple effect and lead to improvements in all aspects of the country.
The elder statesman also emphasized the need for moral rearmament and positive reorientation among Nigerians, stating that without these, the leadership problem plaguing the socio-economic and political landscape of the country cannot be adequately addressed.
Obasanjo’s remarks come at a critical time when Nigeria faces numerous challenges, including economic stagnation, insecurity, and a lack of basic amenities.
His call for a change in leadership mentality and the need for individuals with integrity and a commitment to public service to be elected to power resonates with many Nigerians who yearn for a better future for their country.
