A significant cybersecurity incident has unfolded involving Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank), one of Nigeria’s prominent financial institutions.
On the night of August 14, 2024, reports emerged that hackers had seized the bank’s website, gtbank.com, rendering it inaccessible.
This attack coincided with the recent renewal of the website’s domain for another five years, raising concerns about the timing and intent of the breach.
Despite the disruption to the website, GTBank’s mobile applications remained operational, allowing customers to continue banking activities.
Sources suggest that the hackers may have created a fraudulent version of the GTBank website to intercept sensitive customer data, a tactic known as phishing.
Although no hacker group has claimed responsibility, cybersecurity experts warn that the attackers could have accessed login credentials, putting customer information at risk.
GTBank has yet to issue a formal statement addressing the incident, but the situation underscores the growing threat of cyberattacks in the banking sector, prompting customers to stay vigilant about their online security practices.
