The Russian Embassy in Nigeria has officially denied any involvement with protesters in northern Nigeria who were seen carrying Russian flags and chanting slogans in support of President Vladimir Putin.
In a press statement, the Embassy stressed that the Russian government and its officials are not involved in these activities and do not coordinate them in any way.
The Embassy emphasized Russia’s longstanding policy of non-interference in the domestic affairs of foreign states, including Nigeria.
It reaffirmed Russia’s respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty and democratic processes, stating that peaceful demonstrations in conformity with Nigerian law are a manifestation of democracy.
However, the Nigerian government has detained some tailors for making Russian flags that were waved during the anti-government protests.
The Nigerian military has also pushed back, stating that flying foreign flags by marchers is a “treasonable offence” and will be treated as such.
