The Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja has issued a ruling that restricts protesters to the MKO Abiola Stadium.
The decision came after FCT Minister Nyesom Wike filed an ex parte application, expressing concerns about potential security risks associated with protests in public spaces.
Justice Sylvanus Oriji, who presided over the case, acknowledged the importance of safeguarding public order while also respecting the rights of citizens to assemble and express their views.
The court’s ruling specifically prohibits any gatherings on roads or in other public areas from August 1 to August 10, directing all protests to take place within the confines of the stadium.
This measure aims to ensure the safety of both protesters and the general public, allowing the demonstration to proceed in a more controlled environment.
While the ruling may be seen as a limitation on protest rights, it reflects a careful consideration of the need for security and public safety in the capital city.
