Kenneth Okonkwo, a chieftain of the Labour Party (LP), has cut ties with Peter Obi, the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election.
Okonkwo says he no longer has confidence in Obi’s ability to build a party that can win elections.
Okonkwo believes Obi has “proved that even if the people vote for him, he doesn’t have what it takes to secure the mandate”.
He cites Obi’s lack of leadership in resolving issues within the party’s national working committee and his failure to support the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in “fighting criminals who want to hijack their party”.
Okonkwo says he cannot continue to speak on behalf of a leader whose stand on important issues is unclear.
He has decided to continue his political journey without Peter Obi, stating that his comments have nothing to do with any desire to join the ruling APC or main opposition PDP.
