The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, has taken a bold step in the fight for local government autonomy in Nigeria.
He has filed a lawsuit against the 36 state governors at the Supreme Court, determined to address the long-standing issue of power imbalance between the different tiers of government.
As a passionate advocate for grassroots development, Fagbemi believes that local governments should have the autonomy to make decisions and manage their affairs without undue interference from state governments.
The lawsuit aims to prohibit the governors from unlawfully dissolving democratically elected local government councils, a practice that has been a thorn in the flesh of many communities across the country.
Fagbemi argues that this action is a blatant violation of the 1999 Constitution, which clearly states that local governments should be run by elected officials.
