Femi Fani-Kayode, the former minister of aviation, has spoken out against the rumors circulating about President Bola Tinubu’s signing of the Samoa Agreement.
The agreement, which was signed between the European Union and the Organisation of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OACPS), has been the subject of speculation regarding its potential impact on LGBTQ rights in Nigeria.
Fani-Kayode firmly dismissed the insinuation that the Samoa Agreement contains any provisions that would legalize LGBTQ rights in Nigeria.
He emphasized that the federal government has categorically denied the presence of any such clauses in the agreement.
The former minister explained that before signing the agreement, the Nigerian government conducted extensive reviews and consultations to ensure that none of the 103 articles in the Samoa Agreement would contravene the country’s constitution or existing laws, including the legislation against same-sex relationships enacted in 2014.
