The Federal Government of Nigeria, in partnership with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and Nigeria Inter-bank Settlement System (NIBSS), is set to unveil a groundbreaking initiative: a new national ID card with integrated payment and social service capabilities.
Underpinned by the NIMC Act No. 23 of 2007, this innovative card aims to provide citizens with verifiable national identity features while facilitating access to both government and private services. Moreover, it seeks to foster financial inclusion and empower individuals across the nation.
Key features of the new national ID card include machine-readable zones, biometric authentication, offline functionality, and the ability to function as a debit/prepaid card. Eligibility for the card is limited to registered citizens and legal residents possessing a National Identification Number (NIN).
