Doctors in Ondo State are taking action! They’ve started a 14-day warning strike because some of them haven’t been paid their salaries for seven months.
Led by the Association of Resident Doctors at the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital, they’re saying, “Enough is enough!” This strike shows that doctors need to be paid fairly and that the healthcare system in Nigeria needs to change.
During the protest, Dr. John Matthew, President of the UNIMEDTH ARD, expressed frustration to journalists, stating that their members have not yet received their entitled payments. He said:
“We demand full payment of the arrears of salaries owed to our members and payment of February 2024 palliative to our House Officers. “the management should pay the February hazard allowance to our members and urgently address the severe clinical manpower shortage in the institution. Our members work everyday. There are no staff due to Japa syndrome.”
Reports indicate that the state chapter of the Nigeria Medical Association has urged the state government to address the shortage of resident doctors in state-owned hospitals.
